Art Market Slumps 12% to $57.5 Billion

The art market experienced a slowdown in 2023 and a 12% decline globally in 2024 to US$57.5 billion, with high-value works being particularly affected. In contrast, lower-priced works saw an increase in sales, with lots sold for less than US$50,000 rising by 20%. A younger generation of collectors is entering the market, with insurance firm Arte Generali insuring more 30-somethings starting collections at young ages and making "radical" choices. UBS expects this trend to continue due to an unprecedented wealth transfer over the next 20-25 years, with around US$83 trillion in assets changing hands globally.

Hellfest Breaks Barriers with Female Metal Vocalists

Hellfest's recent lineup featured nine bands with female lead vocalists, a notable step towards recognizing women in metal music. Camille Contreras, a self-taught metalcore vocalist, joined French band Novelists and faced backlash for her voice, but proved herself during live shows, helping the band gain international traction. US rock giant Linkin Park returned to Hellfest with new vocalist Emily Armstrong, who joined following Chester Bennington's death in 2017. The festival's initiative to feature more women-fronted acts is seen as a "very good start" by some, including Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel, who notes that it will inspire young girls to pursue their passion for music.
