NSW Government Boosts Arts with Tax Reform Plans

The NSW government plans to use tax reform to boost Australia's struggling culture sector by exempting prize money from Goods and Services Tax (GST), offering incentives for wealthy benefactors to donate, taxing vacant commercial spaces, and allowing arts workers to claim new expenses. Arts Minister John Graham will host a cultural arts tax summit at the Sydney Opera House on September 26, where changes may apply to various industries including galleries, libraries, museums, performing arts, music, screen and digital games, visual arts and crafts, literature and writing, and design, architecture and fashion.

Dickson's Paintings Capture Carnival Magic and Decay

The exhibition "Wonder Wheel" showcases paintings by artist Dickson, focusing on fairgrounds and their allure despite artificiality. The works, created between 2004 and 2025, capture the dynamic movement of visitors at carnivals like New York's Feast of San Gennaro and Coney Island's amusement park. Dickson's studio, located on Mulberry Street in New York, is tied to her early years and influences, as seen in works such as "San Gennaro Up in the Air 3" and "Baroque Chair-o-plane". The artist draws inspiration from Joseph Stella's Brooklyn Bridge paintings, while "From the Ferris Wheel" highlights the stark shadows cast by lights on a gondola.

Huntington Beach Considers Museum Relocation Plan

Huntington Beach officials are considering relocating the city's museum to a vacant area of the library to create a cohesive cultural district along Main Street, capitalizing on the area's international surf destination reputation. The Huntington Beach Art Center has expressed preliminary support for the move, which could help drive tourism to the upper end of Main Street. The museum was founded by Canadian Natalie Kotsch, who envisioned a space where visitors could see memorabilia and art related to surfing culture. Although previous relocation plans were met with resistance from local surfers, officials are now exploring new options, including collaboration with the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente.
