African Nations Seek International Aid Assistance from UK, UN, and NGOs Amid Escalating Conflicts

Published on 4.22.25

The humanitarian crisis in various parts of Africa has brought international relations to the forefront as countries and organizations scramble to provide aid and address the escalating conflicts. The UK's pledge of £120m worth of food and medical assistance to Sudan is a notable example, with Manager Birhane Teame urging international organizations to assist his group in alleviating the burden. In South Sudan, the conflict between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar has led to widespread violence, prompting UN Special Envoy Nicholas Haysom to urge the Security Council to intervene. The situation is "darkly reminiscent" of previous conflicts that resulted in over 400,000 lives lost. Rwandan Ambassador Robert Kayinamura rejected accusations of attempts to delegitimize the UN. The humanitarian crisis has also affected neighboring countries such as Burundi and Rwanda, with UN Special Envoy Huang Xia stating that violations of international law and human rights persist. In Tigray, a regional government is appealing to the federal government and international donors for more support as the region recovers from conflict. UNICEF's Executive Director Catherine Russell reported that a child is raped every 30 minutes during the conflict, with a 100% increase in verified grave violations against children in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The attacks on Zamzam and Abu Shorouk camps in Sudan's North Darfur province have further exacerbated the situation, with Manager Birhane Teame citing a significant increase in services needed due to the influx of people displaced by the conflict.
