AI-Driven Cybercrime Epidemic Spreads Globally

Published on 4.28.25

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scams and fraud has become a pressing concern for governments worldwide, particularly ahead of the 2025 midterm elections in the US. Cybercrime watchdogs are sounding the alarm about the potential for deepfakes to manipulate facial and voice verification systems, using techniques such as virtual cameras, image substitution, buffer attacks, and voice cloning. In Nigeria, AI-driven scams have become a major issue, with police raids leading to arrests of individuals from East and Southeast Asia. The country has emerged as a hotspot for cryptocurrency and romance scams, facilitated by technological innovations such as new online markets, malware, and deepfake technologies that make it harder for governments to respond to the threat. Asian-led groups are operating in various regions, including Africa, South Asia, and select Pacific islands. These groups have also been linked to cyberfraud and recruitment services. The global scam center industry is expanding rapidly, with hundreds of industrial-scale operations generating $40 billion in annual profits. The use of AI in these crimes highlights the need for governments and law enforcement agencies to adapt their strategies to combat this evolving threat.
