AI-Generated Obscenity Sparks Global Concerns

Published on 4.15.25

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised significant concerns globally, particularly in regards to its potential for misuse. A disturbing trend has emerged where individuals are using AI to create and share explicit content, targeting both children and adults. In Japan, a crackdown on the sale of AI-created obscene images has resulted in the arrest of four individuals aged between their 20s and 50s for selling such content on internet auction sites. This is the first time Japanese authorities have taken action against this specific issue. A case in Malaysia involved Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching calling for stronger digital safety measures in schools following a case involving AI-generated obscene images of students. A 16-year-old boy was arrested after using AI to edit photos of female students, creating fake nude images that were shared on social media. The misuse of AI for malicious purposes such as deepfakes has become a growing concern worldwide. Governments and educational institutions must take proactive steps to address this issue and ensure the safety of their citizens, particularly children.
