AI Integration Sparks Judicial Concerns Globally

Published on 4.12.25

The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the judicial framework has led to growing concerns globally. In Pakistan, the Supreme Court has called for comprehensive guidelines to govern AI's use, citing concerns over "automation bias" and the need for transparency, explainability, and contestability in AI outputs. The Federal Judicial Academy has introduced 'Judge-GPT', an AI tool designed to assist district judges with case research and drafting. However, the court emphasized that AI should be used as a tool to aid judicial proceedings, not replace human judges. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah's 18-page judgement highlighted the limitations of AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek, which can enhance judicial capacity but cannot replicate human reasoning, discretion, and empathy. The Pakistani court's warning against "automation bias" echoes concerns about the potential for AI to perpetuate existing biases if not designed and implemented carefully. As AI continues to transform various sectors, including law and justice, it is essential that guidelines and regulations are put in place to ensure its responsible use.
