AI's Impact on Democratic Integrity

Published on 4.14.25

The increasing deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has raised concerns about their responsible use, particularly in sensitive areas such as politics. In India, the 2024 general election saw AI-generated content being used to mislead voters, with deepfake videos of politicians like Rahul Gandhi being circulated. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress party have been accused of using AI-generated robocalls targeting 50 million people. This trend has sparked concerns about the impact of technology on democracy. Experts warn that the use of AI in research can create an illusion of objectivity and undermine credibility when transparency is lacking. The No Fakes Act, a bill introduced last year with bipartisan support, aimed to give individuals control over their digital likeness, but failed to advance due to concerns about First Amendment rights.
