BRICS Ministers Address Global Trade Tensions

Published on 4.29.25

The recent meeting between foreign ministers from BRICS countries has highlighted growing tensions in international trade policies. Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira emphasized the importance of dialogue in addressing global crises and instability, while Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stressed the need for international cooperation. China has been critical of US President Donald Trump's "America First" policies, with Senior Economic Planner Zhao Chenxin defending China's response to US tariffs as being on the "right side of history." This stance is part of a broader effort by China and other BRICS countries to form a united front against what they see as aggressive trade policies from the US. The meeting highlighted concerns over the erosion of global relations and a deteriorating environment for peaceful development. Chinese representative Yang Jiechi argued that a more collaborative approach is needed to address common challenges, rather than resorting to a "law of the jungle" where stronger nations exploit weaker ones. The protection of the multilateral trading system is seen as crucial in this effort, with China's representative at the UN calling for a continued commitment to cooperation over protectionism. The meeting comes ahead of a critical period for international relations, with the July leaders summit set to address pressing global issues related to trade policies within BRICS countries.
