China Accelerates AI Technology Advancements

Published on 5.26.25

China's advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have gained significant momentum, with the country's software development capabilities catching up to global leaders. Nvidia Corp.'s Jensen Huang recently highlighted China's progress in this area, warning that export controls could lead to local companies like Huawei filling the void left by US restrictions on technology exports. This shift is exemplified by startup DeepSeek, which has developed a chatbot rivaling its US competitors at a lower cost. In response, Nvidia plans to launch new lower-cost AI chips for China in June, with production set to begin in Taiwan. This move aims to expand the company's presence in the Chinese market and tap into the growing demand for AI technology. Chinese firms Alibaba and Xiaomi have invested heavily in AI, driven by a national goal to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. According to Lee, this strategy is focused on achieving short-term competitiveness while building domestic capacity to catch up with global leaders. Taiwanese companies such as Foxconn are also focusing on heavy-duty AI applications, including smart cities and manufacturing.
