China Regulates AI Amid Rising Tensions Between Beijing and Taipei

Published on 4.8.25

The increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in various aspects of Chinese society has been a notable trend in recent times. China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is set to publish draft guidelines for the ethical use of AI, which will grant the government authority to review AI usage by companies in sensitive areas if necessary. This move comes as Taiwan accuses China of using generative AI to spread disinformation and create divisions on the island. The Chinese government has been conducting intensified military drills around Taiwan, further escalating tensions between the two nations. However, there are also instances where AI is being used for peaceful purposes. In rural China, residents are leveraging AI for advice on farming and pest control through DeepSeek's open-source models. A scientist from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has appealed to the government to utilize AI for peaceful purposes, rather than its current military applications. China's higher education system is rapidly expanding its AI programs, with over 500 universities now offering such courses, according to a report by Xinhua. This growth in AI adoption has raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI-generated content, as Taiwan's government fears it could further polarize public opinion and undermine trust in institutions.
