China's $8-Billion Economic Counterbalance Strategy with Vietnam Amidst US Tariffs

Published on 4.16.25

China-Vietnam Economic Counterbalance Strategy Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned against the dangers of protectionism, stating that it "leads nowhere" and would have "no winners". This warning comes as China prepares to strengthen its ties with Vietnam through 45 cooperation agreements, including a significant $8-billion project linking Vietnam's largest port city to China's border. The move is seen as an attempt by Xi Jinping to offset the impact of US tariffs on Vietnamese goods. This effort is also aimed at countering the impact of US President Donald Trump's tariffs, which have sent global markets into turmoil. As a result, China has seen a 13% and 17% increase in exports in 2023 and 2024, respectively, as it transitions from building housing to constructing factories to make cheap goods for export. The strengthening of ties between China and Vietnam is part of Beijing's strategy to balance the economic impact of US tariffs.
