China Seeks EU Detente Amid US Trade Tensions

Published on 4.27.25

The recent trade tensions between the US and Europe have created an opportunity for China to strengthen its relations with the European Union, as Chinese President Xi Jinping seeks a detente with the EU. This move is a strategic attempt by China to capitalize on the divisions caused by US President Donald Trump's tariffs. In contrast to the US, China has been actively engaging with European leaders, with Xi Jinping meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron in recent months. The Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group's founder Jack Ma met with Trump in 2019 to discuss trade issues, but the meeting did not yield any concrete results. China's efforts to strengthen its ties with Europe may be more successful, as Xi Jinping has been actively promoting a "Belt and Road" initiative that aims to boost economic cooperation between China and European countries. The EU is also exploring alternative trade agreements, including the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with Canada, but this move reflects the EU's desire to diversify its trade relationships and reduce its dependence on the US market. As a result, China may find it easier to establish itself as a reliable trading partner for the EU, potentially leading to increased economic cooperation between the two sides.
