Deepfakes Fuel Child Exploitation Concerns

Published on 4.22.25

The increasing use of AI-generated deepfakes is raising concerns about their potential for exploitation and harm, particularly in cases of sex crimes against minors. In South Korea, victims as young as 12 or 13 years old have been targeted with doctored images and explicit content sent via Telegram. Malaysia's Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called for stricter digital safety protocols in schools to prevent such incidents. She emphasized the need for schools to educate youths about responsible online behavior and usage, highlighting the importance of a broader definition of sexual misconduct that includes digital abuse. Failure to report such offenses can lead to fines under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. Sex educators are calling for a more comprehensive approach to addressing this issue, which includes educating children and young adults about responsible online behavior and the consequences of digital abuse.
