Financial Services Professionals Struggle with AI Governance Risks Amid Cybersecurity Threats from OpenAI's ChatGPT

Published on 4.14.25

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about both opportunities and challenges for financial services professionals. While AI adoption is expected to benefit compliance frameworks, concerns over weak governance and cybersecurity threats persist. According to a recent survey, only 40% of respondents believe their organization has a robust governance infrastructure in place to oversee financial crime. Cybersecurity is the leading catalyst for risk exposure, cited nearly twice as often as other factors by financial services professionals. The increasing use of AI by criminals and predicate crimes are also major concerns. For instance, OpenAI's ChatGPT has raised concerns over its potential for misuse in generating fake receipts, which could be used to support fraudulent activities in workplaces, tax deductions, and crowdfunding platforms. However, nearly half of organizations expect to invest in AI solutions to tackle financial crime, highlighting the industry's recognition of AI's potential benefits. OpenAI is aware of the risks associated with ChatGPT and actively monitors usage, flagging AI-generated images as such through metadata. This highlights the need for financial services professionals to prioritize governance and cybersecurity measures to mitigate these risks.
