Gaza Aid Blockade Sparks Humanitarian Crisis

Published on 4.28.25

The United Nations General Assembly has requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on Israel's obligations to provide aid to the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza. The situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with at least 78 Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours. The Israeli blockade has prevented any humanitarian or commercial supplies from entering Gaza for seven weeks, despite receiving over 116,000 metric tonnes of food assistance that should have lasted two months. The World Food Programme (WFP) has urged all parties to prioritize the needs of civilians and allow aid to enter Gaza immediately, warning that the territory is on the brink of a humanitarian crisis due to a severe shortage of food supplies. Germany, France, and Britain have joined aid agencies in calling for an end to the blockade. Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated that "the situation in Gaza is unacceptable" and that "we must do everything we can to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people". The Israeli Defence Minister has defended the blockade as a necessary measure to prevent Hamas from using aid as a tool against the population. The World Food Programme has reported that its food stocks in Gaza have run out, leaving hundreds of thousands of Palestinians without a main source of sustenance. Families are struggling to feed their children and a humanitarian crisis is imminent unless the blockade is lifted.
