IMF Aid Sparks Indo-Pakistani Diplomatic Strife

Published on 6.2.25

The recent decision by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to release funds to Pakistan has reignited tensions between India and Pakistan. This move has been met with opposition from India, which has expressed concerns that the timing of the fund releases coincides with a surge in drone attacks by Pakistan against Indian military and civilian targets. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has spoken to IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss the issue. India's opposition is not new, as it had abstained from voting on the aid proposal last month following a series of terror attacks attributed to Pakistan-based terrorist leader Masood Azhar. India has also pointed out that there is a correlation between IMF funding releases to Pakistan and increased defense spending by Pakistan. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh warned the IMF that Pakistan plans to use the aid to rebuild locations identified as terror outfit HQs and training camps, including four in Pakistan. The Indian government has appealed to its ambassadors in various countries to oppose future funding packages for Pakistan, citing allegations that Islamabad misused past funds for weapons procurement rather than development purposes.
