India Develops Modular AI Governance Framework

Published on 6.13.25

India is taking a proactive approach to governing its rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with the development of a comprehensive framework that balances innovation with accountability. The AI Governance and Regulatory Framework (RAM) initiative aims to ensure that AI development in the country is transformative yet responsible. A key aspect of this framework is its modular structure, which allows for adaptability to different regional contexts within India. This flexibility will enable the government to tailor the framework to address specific needs and challenges across various states and regions. The initiative also emphasizes collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and private sector companies. A special session was held recently to engage young people in shaping the framework's development and ensuring that it reflects their needs and concerns. This commitment to involving the next generation in AI decision-making underscores India's recognition of the importance of inclusive and participatory governance. The involvement of UNESCO lends credibility and international support to the initiative, demonstrating the government's willingness to engage with international experts and best practices in developing its AI framework.
