Malaysia Mediates US-China Diplomatic Standoff

Published on 4.28.25

The ongoing diplomatic standoff between the US and China has sparked a renewed focus on neutral third-party mediation as a potential solution to ease tensions. Malaysia, which chairs this year's Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit, is emerging as a key player in this effort. Malaysia's semiconductor production is a significant contributor to its economy, with 60% of its output exported to the US worth over RM140 billion. This has led some to suggest that Malaysia could play a crucial role in facilitating negotiations between the two nations. The White House has urged Beijing to take the lead in negotiations, as stated by spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, implying that the US is waiting for China's move. However, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the importance of maintaining moderate international relations with the US and other countries, citing concerns about the impact on people's lives and jobs. Malaysia's commitment to multilateral trade agreements like the WTO was also highlighted by Prime Minister Anwar, who expressed disagreement with the US tariff hike on Malaysian goods. This stance was echoed by Tengku Zafrul during a recent media briefing, where he discussed Asean's position on tariffs following a special meeting of Asean Economic Ministers. Malaysia's potential to serve as an exemplary country in Asia is evident in its ability to balance economic growth with diplomatic efforts. By working together and prioritizing economic growth, Malaysia can play a key role in promoting regional stability and cooperation.
