Netflix Leverages AI for Visual Effects

Published on 7.21.25

The film production process is undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Netflix has successfully utilized generative AI to produce visual effects for its original series, marking a major milestone in the industry. The platform's proprietary technology achieved impressive results, including a VMAF score of 97.5% and a CLIP score of 0.92, ensuring cinema-grade visual fidelity and text-to-video precision. This breakthrough was demonstrated in the Argentine science-fiction series "El Eternauta", where AI-generated footage was used to create a dramatic scene of a building collapsing in Buenos Aires. The creative team at Eyeline Studios, a production innovation group within Netflix, collaborated with the platform's technology to achieve this feat. The result was a significant reduction in production time and costs, as the AI-assisted sequence was completed 10 times faster than traditional methods. The platform's cloud-based architecture ensures seamless integration and collaboration between teams. Additionally, features such as Frame-Perfect Accuracy and Perceptual Realism guarantee pixel-perfect accuracy and structural integrity between source and generated frames. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has announced that AI will be used more extensively in future productions, citing its potential to revolutionize content creation.
