OpenAI Pursues Beneficial Artificial General Intelligence

Published on 5.6.25

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has reached a critical juncture, with OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman aiming to create a brain-like AI system that is user-friendly and beneficial for society. In response to growing concerns about AI safety, OpenAI has prioritized developing "beneficial Artificial General Intelligence" (AGI) with safety and alignment as top priorities. This shift in focus is a significant departure from previous plans, which were criticized by AI safety activists and Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI's predecessor. The company's acquisition of Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool, for approximately $3 billion marks its largest deal to date. The investment from SoftBank has provided OpenAI with the necessary resources to pursue its ambitious goals, including the development of AGI. With a condition that the restructuring must be completed by the end of the year or the investment will be reduced to $20 billion, OpenAI is under pressure to accelerate its development and ensure that its AI systems are aligned with human values.
