Pakistan-Afghanistan Tensions Ease Slightly

Published on 4.22.25

The strained relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been a pressing concern in recent years, with tensions escalating since the Taliban regained power in 2021. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar's upcoming visit to Kabul aims to address these issues and break the deadlock between the two countries. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of allowing militants from the TTP (Taliban-affiliated group) to take shelter and plan attacks from within its borders, a claim that has led to increased tensions. In response, Pakistan has expelled nearly 60,000 Afghans since April, according to the International Organization for Migration. This move is seen as an attempt by Pakistan to exert pressure on Afghanistan to address its concerns. Despite these challenges, there are signs of cooperation between the two countries. A memorandum of understanding was signed for training collaboration in information technology, highlighting the potential for cooperation between the two countries. Federal Minister Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of intelligence and technology sharing in counter-terrorism efforts, highlighting Pakistan's unmatched sacrifices against terrorism. The visit by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar is seen as a crucial step towards improving relations between the two countries. With the Taliban-led Afghan regime facing increasing pressure from the international community, Pakistan's engagement with Afghanistan is likely to be a key factor in determining the future of the region.
