Russia-Ukraine Conflict Enters Mediation Phase with Putin-Zelensky Talks in Istanbul

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been a major point of contention in international relations, with various countries weighing in on the issue. A meeting is set for this Friday between Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky, which may be followed by a trilateral meeting with Turkey.
The Russian delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, met with Ukrainian counterparts in Istanbul on May 16. However, experts say that breaking the "taboo" of accepting EU rules could help farmers and small businesses, making the deal more reciprocal in a volatile world. Trade experts argue that removing red tape on food trade and agreeing to a longer-term fishing rights deal would be beneficial.
Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that a presidential summit is being prepared, but many issues remain unresolved and can only be addressed at the highest level. The Russian delegation leader arrived without preconditions, while Ukrainian President Zelensky declined to attend due to Putin's absence, instead sending Defense Minister Umerov to represent Ukraine.
The EU has been a key player in mediating the conflict, with experts arguing that removing red tape on food trade and agreeing to a longer-term fishing rights deal would be beneficial.
