Singapore's 73GE Election Exposes Threat of AI-Generated Misinformation on TikTok

Published on 4.23.25

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about numerous benefits, but it also poses significant challenges in terms of public trust and security. Communications researcher Saifuddin Ahmed warns that the ease with which realistic deepfakes and audio can be created using generative AI threatens to erode public confidence. This concern is evident in Singapore's experience during its general election (73GE), where AI-generated videos targeted at ruling and opposition politicians on TikTok spread misinformation, while a false video claiming parliament was dissolved at 3am instead of 3pm went viral. In Indonesia, Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasizes the need for a multi-stakeholder approach to formulate regulations on AI that are both legally sound and relevant to society's needs. The delay in establishing these regulations could have far-reaching consequences, including missed opportunities to harness AI effectively and increased complexity in addressing AI-based crimes.
