South Korea-US Trade Tensions Escalate

Published on 4.21.25

The ongoing trade tensions between South Korea and the US are set to be a major focus of upcoming negotiations, with both sides seeking to resolve pending issues for mutual benefit. The talks come as South Korea's Industry Ministry prepares to start tariff negotiations with the US in Washington later this week, following a 25% reciprocal tariff imposed by the US on Korean goods. The issue of Chinese goods being relabelled as Korean exports to evade US President Donald Trump's tariffs has raised concerns about the integrity of South Korea's export system and its potential impact on trade relations with the US. South Korea's customs agency has uncovered millions of dollars' worth of such goods, with 29.5 billion won (US$20.7 million) found in the first quarter, mostly bound for the US. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun will lead the Korean delegation in negotiations with their US counterparts, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The talks are expected to be a crucial test of the two countries' ability to resolve pending issues for mutual benefit. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for the future of trade relations between the two nations.
