Sudan Conflict Escalates Humanitarian Crisis

Published on 4.13.25

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has severe implications for humanitarian aid and civilian protection. The recent attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El-Fasher and two nearby displacement camps have resulted in significant loss of life, with over 100 people feared dead, including at least 20 children. The RSF's actions are part of a larger conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, which has been ongoing since May 10, 2024. The violence has claimed over 29,600 lives since mid-April 2023, with many more displaced or injured. UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami has condemned the attacks, calling for an immediate end to such acts. The targeting of humanitarian workers is particularly concerning, as nine Relief International employees were among those killed in the recent assault on Zamzam displacement camp. The heavy shelling by the RSF has also left hundreds more injured. This escalation of violence raises questions about the ability of international actors to provide aid to affected populations and highlights the need for a coordinated international response to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, including efforts to protect civilians and ensure safe access for aid workers.
