Trump Orders Overhaul Accreditation Process

Published on 4.24.25

The Trump administration's recent executive order targets accrediting bodies, seeking to strip them of diversity, equity, and inclusion requirements in favor of a focus on student outcomes. This move is seen as an attempt by the administration to exert greater control over US universities. Education Secretary Linda McMahon will oversee accrediting organizations to make them more accountable for schools' performance and civil rights violations. This shift in focus is seen as a response to concerns about the role of accrediting bodies in ensuring academic integrity and protecting students' rights. Hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for several universities, including Harvard, have been frozen pending an investigation into their financial dealings with foreign entities. The Higher Education Act's Section 117 requires disclosure of foreign gifts and contracts valued over $250,000, amid growing concerns about China's exploitation of academic ties. Over 60 college presidents have signed an open letter in support of Harvard President Alan Garber's rejection of the administration's demands, including Rep. Tim Walberg, a Republican who has applauded this move.
