Trump's DEI Funding Threat Sparks Controversy

Published on 4.5.25

The recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump has sparked controversy over the teaching of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in public schools across the US. The order threatens to withhold federal funding from schools that do not comply with a strict interpretation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Supreme Court decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. In New York State, education officials have been given 10 days to certify compliance, but they are refusing to abandon their DEI efforts despite the threat of losing billions in federal funding. Julio Flores, program director of the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, notes that some schools have requested professional development on supporting LGBTQ+ students due to a misunderstanding of the executive order. A US District Judge has issued a temporary restraining order against eight Democratic-led states that challenged the Trump administration's decision to cut funding for DEI programs in teacher preparation initiatives. These programs, which provide over $600 million in grants, have been shown to increase teacher retention rates and keep educators in the profession beyond five years. The controversy surrounding the executive order has highlighted the importance of DEI efforts in public schools, with some districts continuing to prioritize these initiatives despite the threat of funding cuts.
