Trump Targets Elite Universities' Funding

Published on 5.24.25

The Trump administration has been cracking down on higher education institutions, with a particular focus on perceived anti-Semitism and "woke" ideology. This effort is evident in the recent actions taken against Harvard University. In February 2025, the US Department of Justice launched a task force to combat anti-Semitic harassment, with plans to visit Harvard and nine other universities. The university was subsequently halted from enrolling international students due to a government standoff over demands to eliminate perceived antisemitism and dismantle diversity initiatives. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem demanded that Harvard share information about foreign student visa holders' illegal activities by April 30 or risk losing international student authorization. US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revoked Harvard University's ability to enroll foreign nationals, citing anti-Semitism and "woke" liberal ideology concerns. However, US District Judge Allison Burroughs issued an injunction against the revocation of the school's SEVP certification. The Trump administration has threatened to review $9 billion in government funding and freeze $2.2 billion in grants and $60 million in contracts if Harvard does not comply with their demands. Harvard has filed a federal lawsuit against the funding freeze, calling it "unlawful and beyond the government's authority."
