US-China Trade Tensions Escalate Globally Amid Tariffs and Economic Uncertainty

Published on 4.13.25

Global trade tensions have taken center stage in international relations, with the US imposing tariffs on dozens of countries, including China. The move has sparked concerns among lawmakers, such as Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who fear the impact on America's massive trade deficits. In response to the tariffs, China is strengthening its ties with India, with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussing ways to boost bilateral trade and investment during a recent meeting. The two countries are seeking to conclude a Bilateral Trade Agreement to mitigate the effects of US tariffs on their economic relationship. China's government is concerned that the 104% tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump will have a negative impact on China-India trade relations. Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach to international relations in the face of global economic uncertainty. The Reserve Bank of India has cut its key repo rate for the second consecutive time to combat sluggish economic growth, which is facing additional headwinds from US tariffs.
