The recent revival of talks between the United States and Iran on their nuclear program has gained momentum, with Oman playing a crucial role in facilitating negotiations. The talks come ahead of a UN nuclear watchdog meeting in June and before the October expiry of the 2015 accord, which aimed to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.
US President Trump indicated progress with Iran on its nuclear program, stating "we've had some very, very good talks" during the fifth round of negotiations in Rome. This optimism was echoed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who expressed potential for progress in talks with the US following proposals made by Oman during negotiations in Rome.
Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq has been instrumental in facilitating these talks, and his country's envoy Pezeshkian met with him to express appreciation for Oman's role. The Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi also expressed hope for further clarification on outstanding issues related to Iran's nuclear program.
The US and Iran are discussing curbing Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions, which have devastated Iran's oil-based economy.
