Canon Adds Passwords to Cameras Amid Cybersecurity Fears

Published on 7.10.25

Canon is adding a password setting function to protect personal information and security in its cameras due to European cybersecurity regulations, specifically the Cyber Resilience Act. The feature will be added to 10 camera models, including the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, to address concerns of photojournalists and professionals who are increasingly targeted by thieves. This move comes after repeated calls for improved security measures in cameras, with incidents such as Jefferson Graham's stolen camera while recording in broad daylight and YouTube photographer Manny Ortiz losing $16,000 worth of gear in Europe.
