  The European Union's General Court has ruled against Verdes Innovations SA's attempt to trademark the iconic Rubik's Cube design, deeming its shape, grid structure, and color differentiation essential for gameplay rather than purely decorative. The court found that these features serve a general purpose, making it impossible to grant trademark protection under EU law. This decision upholds an earlier ruling by the Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in 2017, which also concluded that the cube's design is functional and not just iconic.
