  The Helsinki Biennial, "Shelter: Below and beyond," is prioritizing sustainability as a core aspect of its curatorial approach. Unlike some other biennials, this event is incorporating environmental concerns into its DNA from the outset. The Austrian Klima Biennale in Vienna also focuses on eco-minded art, collaborating with local and international artists to address global environmental crises. In contrast, the Helsinki Biennial's inaugural event used the history and uncertainty of a small island in Finland as a metaphor for the world's environmental issues through site-specific works by 41 artists.
