Japan Restores Cambodia's Ancient Temples of Angkor Wat

  Cambodia's ancient temples are recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, but the country's turbulent past still casts a shadow over its cultural heritage. The Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot, is infamous for its brutal genocide that resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people between 1975 and 1979. Today, efforts are being made to preserve Cambodia's history and promote tourism, with the Japanese government providing support to help restore the ancient temples, including Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992.
