Nvidia Faces China Backdoor Security Risk Inquiry

Published on 7.31.25

China's Cyberspace Administration has asked Nvidia to explain potential backdoor security risks in its H20 artificial intelligence chips, citing concerns over the impact on Chinese user data and privacy rights. The request comes after US lawmakers called for tracking and positioning functions to be included in AI chips sold abroad. This follows a bill introduced by US Senator Tom Cotton in May, which aims to require location verification mechanisms for AI chips subject to export restrictions. Nvidia's H20 chip was developed specifically for the Chinese market after the US imposed export restrictions on advanced AI chips in 2023.
