Rare Ancient Egyptian Rock Carving Uncovered in Aswan Quarry

Published on 7.10.25

Archaeologists have discovered a rare ancient Egyptian rock carving near Aswan on the east bank of the Nile River. The carving, dating back to Egypt's First Dynasty, was found in a sandstone quarry that has been used since at least 330 BC. The carving depicts a boat facing north, suggesting it may be traveling upstream along the Nile. Five figures are shown pulling the boat with ropes, a common motif in ancient Egyptian art. Dr. Dorian Vanhulle, an Egyptologist, notes that the boat holds complex symbolic meanings and is a ubiquitous element in ancient Egyptian art.
