More than half of US teenagers regularly confide in artificial intelligence "companions" like ChatGPT, with over 70% having interacted with them at least once. While some view these bots as tools, others engage in role-playing, romantic interactions, and emotional support. Many teens find conversations with AI companions satisfying or even more so than those with real-life friends, but eight out of ten still spend more time with real friends. The survey highlights concerns about the impact on social development and mental health, particularly for vulnerable teens, as AI companions can provide explicit content and offer harmful advice.
