UK Court Blocks VAT on Special Needs School Fees

A UK court has ruled that a 20% VAT tax on school fees for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is "proceedings in Parliament" and therefore inadmissible, but the judges accepted that many SEN pupils will receive worse provision in state schools than they do now. The decision comes after a judicial review claim aimed to have the tax overturned, benefiting half a million pupils nationwide. Families of children with SEN had protested outside the court during the case, citing poor state-provided services as the reason for choosing private education. The government had argued that exemptions for SEN children were incompatible with its policy objectives, but the judges found that most key facts in a report by the National Audit Office (NAO) were agreed upon by both parties.
